In 1950, Dick Ray, fresh from his role as commanding officer of a Navy LCI, established his plumbing business. He studied at the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut during the war. His family immigrated to Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has remained ever since. His uncles were involved in the construction of the first sewer system in Kansas City.

He initiated his plumbing venture armed with just a pair of pipe wrenches. Since he couldn't afford a truck, he relied on the family car for his first service calls. He transported pipes and heavy fittings in a trailer. His wife took care of phone calls at home while also raising their three kids. She took service calls, and Dick Ray responded to them by phone and attended to the jobs. Even back then, they provided 24-hour service.

The family that immigrated from England to Kansas City and contributed to the first sewer installation six generations ago remains strong. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, Dick Ray was studying at the University of Washington in Seattle. He moved from Seattle to the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, graduating as an Ensign.

Following his service in the South Pacific, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where the ship was decommissioned after the war.

In 1949, three years later, Dick returned to his hometown of Kansas City, where he started his plumbing business and began a family with his new bride, Shirley. He couldn't afford a truck and began his business using the family Chevy for service calls, towing an equipment trailer. Dick took on all the labor by himself, as he had no assistants. While raising their three children, Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam. She often took service calls and communicated the work orders to Dick.

They offered 24-hour service even back then. The phone rang next to Dick's bed, and he was always prepared to answer.

Mike Crosby, a Kansas City native, graduated from Bonner Springs High School in 1980. Mike and his wife Sandy have been together since high school. Mike's father-in-law, a plumber, sparked his interest in plumbing. After 4 years of schooling through Plumbers Local 8, Mike earned his Journeyman's License and subsequently achieved his Master Plumber's certification.

Mike trained as an apprentice at A.D. Jacobson, specializing in commercial plumbing. He then switched over to residential plumbing and spent many years in the local industry. After a year working as a Maintenance Supervisor at KU Medical Center, an opportunity emerged for Mike to start his own company.

Mike founded Crosby Plumbing Inc. in 2003, he engaged in both new home construction and service work. Mike is still in the field today with a wide variety of experience ranging from your kitchen sink to the largest sewer treatment plant. He has earned both Master Plumber and Med Gas certifications over the years.
