In 1950, Dick Ray, fresh from his role as commanding officer of a Navy LCI, established his plumbing business. During the war, he attended the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. His family immigrated to Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has remained ever since. His uncles played a role in laying the first sewer in Kansas City.

He initiated his plumbing venture armed with just a pair of pipe wrenches. Since he couldn't afford a truck, he relied on the family car for his first service calls. He towed a trailer carrying pipes and heavy fittings. While raising their three children, his wife handled phone calls at home. She answered service calls, and Dick Ray followed up on them by phone to handle the work. Even back then, they provided 24-hour service.

The family that arrived in Kansas City from England and helped lay the first sewer six generations ago is still thriving. In 1941, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Dick Ray was attending the University of Washington in Seattle. He moved from Seattle to the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, graduating as an Ensign.

Following his service in the South Pacific, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where the ship was decommissioned after the war.

In 1949, three years later, Dick Ray returned to Kansas City, his hometown, to start his plumbing business and build a family with his wife, Shirley. Unable to afford a truck, he started his business using the family Chevy for service calls, pulling an equipment trailer. Dick took on all the labor by himself, as he had no assistants. While raising their three children, Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam. She regularly handled service calls and passed the work orders to Dick.

In those early days, they still provided round-the-clock service. The phone rang next to Dick's bed, and he was always prepared to answer.
