Dick Ray started his plumbing company in 1950 after serving as the commanding officer of a Navy LCI. He studied at the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut during the war. His family arrived in Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has stayed ever since. His uncles contributed to the installation of Kansas City's first sewer.

He began the plumbing business with just a pair of pipe wrenches. Since he couldn't afford a truck, he relied on the family car for his first service calls. He used a trailer to haul pipes and heavy fittings. His wife took care of phone calls at home while also raising their three kids. She answered service calls, and Dick Ray followed up on them by phone to handle the work. Even in those times, they provided round-the-clock service.

The family that came from England to Kansas City and assisted in laying the first sewer six generations ago continues to flourish. In 1941, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Dick Ray was attending the University of Washington in Seattle. He departed Seattle to enroll in the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, where he graduated as an Ensign.

Following his service in the South Pacific, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where the ship was decommissioned after the war.

Three years later, in 1949, back in his hometown of Kansas City, Dick started his plumbing business and began a family with his new wife, Shirley. He couldn't afford a truck and began his business using the family Chevy for service calls, towing an equipment trailer. Dick took on all the labor by himself, as he had no assistants. While raising their three children, Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam. She frequently took service calls and relayed the work orders to Dick.

Even in those early days, they provided 24-hour service. The phone rang next to Dick's bed, and he was always prepared to answer.
