In 1920, Vearl Manwill loaded his horse and wagon with tools, carbide lights, and pipes to begin a journey that would lead him to numerous farmhouses to implement “modern” carbide lighting and piping. His work was integral to the first indoor lighting systems ever established. After some time, Vearl decided to make Salt Lake City his home and later opened a plumbing shop in his garage on 2700 South. In 1943, he opened his first showroom on 300 South in Salt Lake City. His establishment was a comprehensive hardware store offering washers, dryers, and even jewelry. Vearl bought one of the earliest television sets in Salt Lake City. While the TV only showed black and white pictures, it became a sensation in the community and attracted many visitors. Eventually, Vearl moved away from selling jewelry and other appliances to dedicate himself to what he did best—plumbing and heating goods. Today, the company is run by his grandson.

Today, Jim Manwill, the third generation, runs the business. Jim was raised in the family business engaging in tasks from trench digging to plumbing new homes, executing repairs, and selling HVAC products.
