In 1920, Vearl Manwill loaded his horse and wagon with tools, carbide lights, and pipes to start a mission that would lead him to numerous farmhouses to implement “modern” carbide lighting and piping. His work was integral to the first indoor lighting systems ever established. Eventually, Vearl opted to establish himself in Salt Lake City and subsequently opened a plumbing shop in his garage on 2700 South. In 1943, he opened his first showroom on 300 South in Salt Lake City. The shop was a full-service hardware store that sold washers, dryers, and even jewelry. Vearl bought one of the earliest television sets in Salt Lake City. Even though the TV set featured only black and white visuals, it captured the attention of the town and attracted many visitors. Over time, Vearl shifted his focus away from selling jewelry and appliances to concentrate on what he excelled at—plumbing and heating supplies. Today, the company is run by his grandson.

Currently, the business is led by Jim Manwill, the third generation. Jim grew up immersed in the family business handling tasks from digging trenches to plumbing new homes, conducting repairs, and selling HVAC systems.
