The man who started it all, Arthur W. Crooks, entered life during the year 1885 in Goshen, Indiana and moved to the city of Sturgis, Michigan as a young boy. Although he was the top student of his graduating class, he had a scholarship to study at Hillsdale College, but monetary challenges prevented him from attending.
He became an educator in Colon, Michigan and by 1907 he settled in the city of Battle Creek to begin his plumbing trade.
By 1909, he took on the role of plumbing inspector in the city of Battle Creek, however resumed plumbing in the year 1911 by working with Hanchett Plumbing, a business he ultimately purchased in the year 1912. At that time, his pay was 12-1/2 cents per hour.
Arthur's children, Helen, Walt, and Warren all participated in the plumbing industry. Helen and Warren operated the business from the 1950s onward until March in 1980. Currently, it is run and owned by Arthur W. Crooks II, his grandson.
