South Shore 1871: our founder Alvin Hollis was both a pioneering entrepreneur and a dedicated community member.

Back then, hay and grain were vital for nearly everyone. To cut costs, Alvin constructed a railroad siding and bought in bulk. Deliveries were made to homes and farms using horse-drawn wagons.

Expanding into heating and cooling, Alvin started providing firewood and ice. Alvin purchased woodlots, built an ice house by Weymouth Great Pond, and provided year-round deliveries to residences, farms, and businesses.

With the transition from wood to coal, Alvin and his son-in-law Leonard Bicknell created a state-of-the-art coal storage facility and used motorized trucks for transport.

As coal-powered systems evolved, we introduced Central Heating Systems to the South Shore.

Leonard's son, Alvin Bicknell, transitioned from coal to oil, installing many of the state's first automatic heating systems.

Hello, I’m Laura Bicknell Carbone.

My great-great-grandfather ensured Alvin Hollis's success by treating our customers and staff as family. Since 1871, we have upheld this principle by ensuring our South Shore neighbors remain safe and comfortable.

My grandfather and father took pride in the smiles of our customers who appreciated their expertly crafted heating, cooling, and plumbing systems. As a fifth-generation owner, I share that same sense of fulfillment.

I began working part-time as a teenager and have been involved in every facet of our business. In 1991, I earned a BS from St. Lawrence University. Since then, I have enjoyed serving Alvin Hollis full-time, focusing on Sales, Marketing, and Customer Service.

In 1995, I began cycling with my dad in the Pan-Mass Challenge bike-a-thon, raising nearly $800,000 for Dana Farber. I sit on the board of the South Shore Chamber of Commerce and am proud to be a Platinum Member of the President's Circle at South Shore Hospital.
