South Shore 1871: our founder Alvin Hollis was both a pioneering entrepreneur and a dedicated community member.

Back then, hay and grain were vital for nearly everyone. To cut costs, Alvin constructed a railroad siding and bought in bulk. Horses pulled wagons for deliveries to homes and farms.

Expanding into heating and cooling, Alvin started providing firewood and ice. He acquired woodlots, constructed an ice house near Weymouth Great Pond, and delivered year-round to homes, farms, and businesses.

With the transition from wood to coal, Alvin and his son-in-law Leonard Bicknell created a state-of-the-art coal storage facility and used motorized trucks for transport.

As coal systems progressed, we launched Central Heating Systems in the South Shore.

Alvin Bicknell, Leonard's son, shifted from coal to oil by installing some of the first automatic heating systems in the state.

Hello, I’m Laura Bicknell Carbone.

My great-great-grandfather built Alvin Hollis's legacy by treating our customers and team like family. Since 1871, we have carried on this legacy by prioritizing the safety and comfort of our South Shore neighbors.

Both my grandfather and father felt fulfilled by the happiness of our customers with their efficiently engineered heating, cooling, and plumbing systems. As the fifth generation, I experience that same joy.

I began working part-time as a teenager and have been involved in every facet of our business. I graduated with a BS from St. Lawrence University in 1991. Since then, I have relished my full-time role at Alvin Hollis, concentrating on Sales, Marketing, and Customer Service.

In 1995, I started cycling alongside my dad in the Pan-Mass Challenge bike-a-thon, together raising almost $800,000 for Dana Farber. I serve on the board of the South Shore Chamber of Commerce and am a Platinum Member of the President's Circle at South Shore Hospital.
