With no job prospects after months of searching, I made the decision to start my own business. Armed with little money, no credit, and a determination to succeed, I converted my Chevy HHR into a work vehicle and got started. Harry Berger established Standard Plumbing in 1923, installing our first coal-fed, gravity-fired furnace in Manhattan, KS. After establishing our reputation, we took on our first large project, installing plumbing for the new Wareham hotel. Indeed, that very Wareham hotel!

During the tough times of the Depression and Dust Bowl, Mr. Berger went to Alaska to search for gold, leaving his wife to oversee operations. After his return from Alaska, Paul Anderson became an apprentice plumber with the company in 1941, eventually working there for 16 years before purchasing it in 1957.

Paul's sons, Rick and Dale, later became part of the family business. In 1958, we installed the first central air conditioning unit in the town. In January 1988, Rick purchased Dale Anderson's portion of the company.

The company was sold to four employees in 2004. Today, three of those original employees still serve as the Board of Directors, managing the company’s daily activities.
