He studied at the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut during the war. His family arrived in Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has stayed ever since. His uncles contributed to the installation of Kansas City's first sewer.

Starting with only a pair of pipe wrenches, he launched his plumbing business. Without a truck, he used the family car for his first service calls. He used a trailer to haul pipes and heavy fittings. His wife took care of phone calls at home while also raising their three kids. She took service calls, and Dick Ray responded to them by phone and attended to the jobs. They offered 24-hour service even in those early days.

The family that immigrated from England to Kansas City and contributed to the first sewer installation six generations ago remains strong. In 1941, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Dick Ray was attending the University of Washington in Seattle. He moved from Seattle to the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, graduating as an Ensign.

After a tour in the South Pacific, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where the vessel was decommissioned at the war's conclusion.

In 1949, three years later, Dick Ray returned to Kansas City, his hometown, to start his plumbing business and build a family with his wife, Shirley. Since he couldn't buy a truck, he began his business using the family Chevy for service calls, with an equipment trailer in tow. He managed all the work himself, without any helpers. Shirley managed phone calls at their home in Merriam while also caring for their three kids. She frequently took service calls and relayed the work orders to Dick.

In those early days, they still provided round-the-clock service. The phone rang beside Dick's bed, and he was always ready to respond.

Mike Crosby, a Kansas City native, graduated from Bonner Springs High School in 1980. Mike and his wife, Sandy were high school sweethearts. Mike's father-in-law was a plumber and got Mike interested in the business. After 4 years of schooling through Plumbers Local 8, Mike received his Journeyman's certification and later obtained his Master Plumber's License.

He completed an apprenticeship at A.D. Jacobson focusing on commercial plumbing. He then switched over to residential plumbing and spent many years in the local industry. Following a year as a Maintenance Supervisor at KU Medical Center, the opportunity arose for Mike to create his own business.

After starting Crosby Plumbing Inc. in 2003, he operated in new home builds and service areas. Mike continues to work in the field, offering extensive expertise from kitchen plumbing to large-scale sewer treatment plants. Over the years, he has become not only Master Plumber certified but also Med Gas certified.
