Dick Ray started his plumbing company in 1950 after serving as the commanding officer of a Navy LCI. He studied at the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut during the war. His family immigrated to Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has remained ever since. His uncles played a role in laying the first sewer in Kansas City.

He initiated his plumbing venture armed with just a pair of pipe wrenches. Without a truck, he used the family car for his first service calls. He towed a trailer carrying pipes and heavy fittings. His wife took care of phone calls at home while also raising their three kids. She answered service calls, and Dick Ray followed up on them by phone to handle the work. They offered 24-hour service even in those early days.

The family that came from England to Kansas City and assisted in laying the first sewer six generations ago continues to flourish. At the time of the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941, Dick Ray was a student at the University of Washington in Seattle. He left Seattle to join the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, graduating as an Ensign.

Following his service in the South Pacific, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where the ship was decommissioned after the war.

Three years later, in 1949, back in his hometown of Kansas City, Dick started his plumbing business and began a family with his new wife, Shirley. Unable to afford a truck, he started his business using the family Chevy for service calls, pulling an equipment trailer. He managed all the work himself, without any helpers. While raising their three children, Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam. She often took service calls and communicated the work orders to Dick.

Even in those early days, they provided 24-hour service. The phone rang next to Dick's bed, and he was always prepared to answer.
