Dick Ray started his plumbing company in 1950 after serving as the commanding officer of a Navy LCI. During the war, he attended the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. His family immigrated to Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has remained ever since. His uncles contributed to the installation of Kansas City's first sewer.

Starting with only a pair of pipe wrenches, he launched his plumbing business. Lacking a truck, he utilized the family car for his initial service calls. He transported pipes and heavy fittings in a trailer. His wife took care of phone calls at home while also raising their three kids. She took service calls, and Dick Ray responded to them by phone and attended to the jobs. They offered 24-hour service even in those early days.

The family that immigrated from England to Kansas City and contributed to the first sewer installation six generations ago remains strong. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, Dick Ray was studying at the University of Washington in Seattle. He moved from Seattle to the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, graduating as an Ensign.

After serving in the South Pacific during the war, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where his ship was decommissioned at the war's end.

Three years later, in 1949, back in his hometown of Kansas City, Dick started his plumbing business and began a family with his new wife, Shirley. Since he couldn't buy a truck, he began his business using the family Chevy for service calls, with an equipment trailer in tow. He managed all the work himself, without any helpers. Shirley managed phone calls at their home in Merriam while also caring for their three kids. She frequently took service calls and relayed the work orders to Dick.

In those early days, they still provided round-the-clock service. The phone rang by Dick's bedside, and he was always ready to take the call.
