In 1950, Dick Ray, who had recently served as the commanding officer of a Navy LCI, launched his plumbing business. During the war, he attended the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. His family arrived in Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has stayed ever since. His uncles were involved in the construction of the first sewer system in Kansas City.

Starting with only a pair of pipe wrenches, he launched his plumbing business. Since he couldn't afford a truck, he relied on the family car for his first service calls. He towed a trailer carrying pipes and heavy fittings. While raising their three children, his wife handled phone calls at home. She took service calls, and Dick Ray responded to them by phone and attended to the jobs. They offered 24-hour service even in those early days.

The family that came from England to Kansas City and assisted in laying the first sewer six generations ago continues to flourish. In 1941, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Dick Ray was attending the University of Washington in Seattle. He moved from Seattle to the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, graduating as an Ensign.

After serving in the South Pacific during the war, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where his ship was decommissioned at the war's end.

Three years later, in 1949, back in his hometown of Kansas City, Dick started his plumbing business and began a family with his new wife, Shirley. Unable to afford a truck, he started his business using the family Chevy for service calls, pulling an equipment trailer. He managed all the work himself, without any helpers. Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam while raising their three children. She regularly handled service calls and passed the work orders to Dick.

Even in those early days, they provided 24-hour service. The phone rang beside Dick's bed, and he was always ready to respond.
