Dick Ray started his plumbing company in 1950 after serving as the commanding officer of a Navy LCI. During the war, he attended the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. His family immigrated to Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has remained ever since. His uncles played a role in laying the first sewer in Kansas City.

He began the plumbing business with just a pair of pipe wrenches. Lacking a truck, he utilized the family car for his initial service calls. He towed a trailer carrying pipes and heavy fittings. His wife took care of phone calls at home while also raising their three kids. She fielded service calls, and Dick Ray took them over the phone to address the jobs. They offered 24-hour service even in those early days.

The family that immigrated from England to Kansas City and contributed to the first sewer installation six generations ago remains strong. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, Dick Ray was studying at the University of Washington in Seattle. He left Seattle to join the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, graduating as an Ensign.

After serving in the South Pacific during the war, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where his ship was decommissioned at the war's end.

Three years later, in 1949, back in his hometown of Kansas City, Dick started his plumbing business and began a family with his new wife, Shirley. Since he couldn't buy a truck, he began his business using the family Chevy for service calls, with an equipment trailer in tow. Dick took on all the labor by himself, as he had no assistants. Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam while raising their three children. She regularly handled service calls and passed the work orders to Dick.

They offered 24-hour service even back then. The phone rang beside Dick's bed, and he was always ready to respond.
