In 1950, Dick Ray, fresh from his role as commanding officer of a Navy LCI, established his plumbing business. During the war, he attended the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. The family came to Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has been here ever since. His uncles contributed to the installation of Kansas City's first sewer.

He initiated his plumbing venture armed with just a pair of pipe wrenches. Without a truck, he used the family car for his first service calls. He towed a trailer carrying pipes and heavy fittings. His wife managed phone calls at home while raising their three children. She fielded service calls, and Dick Ray took them over the phone to address the jobs. They offered 24-hour service even in those early days.

The family that came from England to Kansas City and assisted in laying the first sewer six generations ago continues to flourish. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, Dick Ray was studying at the University of Washington in Seattle. He left Seattle to join the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, graduating as an Ensign.

Following his service in the South Pacific, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where the ship was decommissioned after the war.

Three years later, in 1949, back in his hometown of Kansas City, Dick started his plumbing business and began a family with his new wife, Shirley. Since he couldn't buy a truck, he began his business using the family Chevy for service calls, with an equipment trailer in tow. Dick worked alone, handling all the labor himself. Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam while raising their three children. She frequently took service calls and relayed the work orders to Dick.

In those early days, they still provided round-the-clock service. The phone rang beside Dick's bed, and he was always ready to respond.
