Founded in 1978 by John E. Shekell, the company started as a small heating and air conditioning operation with one van. The business soon branched out into plumbing and electrical work. In the 1980s, John Shekell advanced the company by acquiring the service center of George Koch Sons. This move established Shekell as the leading HVAC service company in the Tri-State region. Transitioning from service and installations, Shekell entered the realm of design/build projects and plan/specification contracting. Shekell expanded further in 2000 by acquiring WSC Associates, a distinguished engineering firm in Evansville, Indiana. The acquisition allowed Shekell to enhance its design capabilities, establishing a strong presence in the region. In retrospect, John Shekell believes the achievements of J.E. Shekell, Inc. stem from loyal customers, devoted employees, comprehensive training, and a commitment to safety.

An Evansville native, Kevin graduated from Reitz High School in 1988. His journey at J.E. Shekell Inc. began as a residential HVAC installer. During his eight years as a service technician, he achieved an Associate's degree in Applied Science in Industrial Technology from Ivy Tech.

After his time as a service technician, he transitioned to a residential HVAC sales role. Kevin later added commercial industrial HVAC/sheet metal estimator and project manager to his skill set. He attended Oakland City University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Management.

In 2004, Kevin became the Vice President of Construction. In December 2006, he earned his Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Phoenix.

For 16 years, he has been married and is the proud parent of two children. He served as the president of the local Evansville SMACNA chapter from 2004 to 2006. Kevin took on the role of President of J.E. Shekell in January 2009.

Bayer's Plumbing, Inc. was established in 1983 and officially incorporated in 1984. The company was launched by Joe and Maria Bayer, along with Joe's brother, Mike. The business started in the residence of Joe and Maria. They stored inventory in the garage and set up an office in what used to be the children's playroom.

In 1985, Joe and Maria relocated. They kept the office in their home and moved the inventory to a local storage facility. In January 1987, they purchased three more vans and employed a secretary. In May 1987, the business moved to a 6,000 sq ft facility with a showroom, office, and shop capable of housing eight vans.
