John E. Shekell established the company in 1978, beginning with a single van for heating and air conditioning services. The business soon branched out into plumbing and electrical work. During the 1980s, John Shekell propelled the company forward by purchasing George Koch Sons' service center. With this purchase, Shekell became the foremost HVAC service provider in the Tri-State area. Shekell expanded from service and installations into design/build projects and plan/specification contracting. In 2000, Shekell acquired WSC Associates, a well-respected engineering firm in Evansville, Indiana. This new subsidiary enhanced Shekell's design capabilities, solidifying its presence in the area. Reflecting on the journey, John Shekell attributes the success of J.E. Shekell, Inc. to loyal customers, dedicated employees, extensive training, and a strong focus on safety.

An Evansville native, Kevin graduated from Reitz High School in 1988. He began his career at J.E. Shekell Inc. as a residential HVAC installer. During his eight years as a service technician, he achieved an Associate's degree in Applied Science in Industrial Technology from Ivy Tech.

After his time as a service technician, he transitioned to a residential HVAC sales role. Kevin later added commercial industrial HVAC/sheet metal estimator and project manager to his skill set. At Oakland City University, he completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Management.

Kevin was appointed Vice President of Construction in 2004. He finished his Master of Business Administration degree at the University of Phoenix in December 2006.

He has been happily married for 16 years and is a father of two. From 2004 to 2006, he held the position of president of the local Evansville SMACNA chapter. Kevin took on the role of President of J.E. Shekell in January 2009.

Bayer's Plumbing, Inc. was established in 1983 and officially incorporated in 1984. The company was launched by Joe and Maria Bayer, along with Joe's brother, Mike. Initially, operations took place in Joe and Maria's home. Inventory was kept in the garage, and the office was established in the former toy room of their children.

The year 1985 saw Joe and Maria change their address. They kept the office in their home and moved the inventory to a local storage facility. In January 1987, they purchased three more vans and employed a secretary. In May 1987, the business moved to a 6,000 sq ft facility with a showroom, office, and shop capable of housing eight vans.

By 1991, the business had grown substantially and needed a larger facility. They built a new 30,000 sq ft facility and moved to 7944 Bell Oaks Dr in Newburgh, where they still operate.
