Originally founded in 1964, the business was known as Hayes Valley Hardware, Heating and Plumbing in San Francisco. Denis began his journey in plumbing while he was a student at Arch Bishop Riordan High School, taking on work at Southwood Hardware, Plumbing and Heating, helping his father and his father's partner, Bill Sylvia. In 1981, after graduating from Riordan High School, Denis took over a partnership in the company from Bill Sylvia. He then dedicated himself to full-time work in the company. I maintain very friendly terms with both of them, and ex-colleagues of those businesses.

I started doing plumbing for a neighbor, the owner of Bright Plumbing, in the year 1982 after arriving to the Bay Area from my time teaching English in the Far East for two and a half years.

I care about environmental issues, and have made several trips with a group to advocate Congress, the executive branch and the World Bank regarding sustainable forestry and the ecosystem at my personal cost.

I participate in environmental advocacy, helping to defeat poorly planned developments, and am currently active in Pacificans for Sustainable Development, the Pacifica Climate Committee, & the city council designated ""Climate Action Plan Task Force"".
