The business began in 1964 as Hayes Valley Hardware, Heating and Plumbing in San Francisco. In 1966, the company relocated from Filmore to the Southwood Shopping Center at Orange and El Camino in South San Francisco.
While attending Arch Bishop Riordan High School, Denis started working after school and on weekends at Southwood Hardware, Plumbing and Heating, where he supported his father and his partner, Bill Sylvia. In 1981, after graduating from Riordan High School, Denis took over a partnership in the company from Bill Sylvia. At that point, he committed to working full-time in the business. As a Certified Plumbing Inspector, Denis has also taught apprenticeship courses at San Mateo Adult School, affiliated with the Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling Contractors Association. He holds certification as a backflow tester from the American Water Works Association. Denis is licensed with a C-36 Plumbing License and a C-20 Heating/HVAC License from the State of California. I am passionate about sustainability, and have made multiple journeys with a group to advocate the U.S. Congress, the administration and global institutions regarding environmental protection and the natural world at my expense.

I participate in environmental advocacy, actively opposing poorly planned developments, and am currently involved in community sustainability initiatives, the Pacifica Climate Committee, & the city council-selected ""Climate Action Task Force"".
