During his time at Arch Bishop Riordan High School, Denis took on a job after school and on weekends at Southwood Hardware, Plumbing and Heating, where he supported his father and his partner, Bill Sylvia. In 1981, after graduating from Riordan High School, Denis took over a partnership in the company from Bill Sylvia. At that point, he committed to working full-time in the business.
