In 1964, the company was established as Hayes Valley Hardware, Heating and Plumbing in San Francisco. The business moved to the Southwood Shopping Center at Orange and El Camino in South San Francisco in 1966, leaving Filmore behind.
During his time at Arch Bishop Riordan High School, Denis took on a job after school and on weekends at Southwood Hardware, Plumbing and Heating, assisting his father and his partner, Bill Sylvia. After completing his education at Riordan High School in 1981, Denis purchased a partnership from Bill Sylvia. At that point, he committed to working full-time in the business. Denis is a Certified Plumbing Inspector and has instructed apprenticeship courses at San Mateo Adult School through the Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling Contractors Association. He holds certification as a backflow tester from the American Water Works Association. Denis possesses a C-36 Plumbing License from the State of California and a C-20 Heating/HVAC License. I began doing plumbing for a local resident, Bright Winn, in the early 1980s after coming back to SF from my teaching stint in Asia for 2 1/2 years.

I care about environmental issues, and have made several trips with a group to advocate Congress, the administration and the World Bank regarding sustainable forestry and the ecosystem at my own expense.

I participate in environment-oriented issues, actively opposing harmful projects, and am currently active in local sustainability efforts, Pacifica Climate Committee, & the city council designated ""Climate Action Plan Task Force"".
