I started my journey as a general contractor in 2000. I leveraged my status as a service-disabled veteran until 2010. I took a five-year pause in Maryland before returning to Sacramento. I still provide my services as a general contractor and home improvement professional. Recertification as a service-disabled veteran may be on my horizon. For now, I proudly promote my business as veteran-owned, reflecting my military service from 1972 to 1996. Having worked across various levels—state, federal, and local, in both commercial and residential sectors, I enjoy addressing homeowners' needs and progressing from one small task to the next. I don't anticipate any significant changes to this process in the near future.
I became self-employed after serving as a soldier in the Army. Some veterans choose to pursue other jobs that offer more stability, like a steady paycheck or an additional pension after another 15 or 20 years. I explored that path, but it wasn't the right fit for me. I found fulfillment in serving something larger than myself while on active duty. Once you embrace true leadership, you understand the importance of guiding others based on a shared belief in unity. Accepting the complacency of those who don't appreciate selfless service was a challenge for me. For now, I enjoy my relationships with customers and the small impact I can make in meeting their expectations, rather than pursuing a traditional job. Retiring as a senior NCO, prioritizing the needs of others was standard practice. Like before, I will persist in providing service where it truly matters in the lives of others.
