In 2000, I embarked on my path as a general contractor. My status as a service-disabled veteran was an asset until 2010. After a five-year break in Maryland, I returned to Sacramento. I remain active as a general contractor and specialist in home improvements. Recertification as a service-disabled veteran may be on my horizon. For now, I proudly promote my business as veteran-owned, reflecting my military service from 1972 to 1996. Having worked across various levels—state, federal, and local, in both commercial and residential sectors, I enjoy addressing homeowners' needs and progressing from one small task to the next. I expect this process to remain consistent for the foreseeable future.
I became self-employed after serving as a soldier in the Army. Some former soldiers seek employment that offers more security, perhaps a reliable paycheck or an additional pension after another 15 or 20 years. I tried that route, but it didn't suit me. My sense of purpose in serving a greater cause was achieved during my active duty. True leadership involves recognizing the responsibility of guiding others with a belief in collective effort. I found it difficult to accept the complacency of individuals who fail to see the value in selfless service. For now, I enjoy my relationships with customers and the small impact I can make in meeting their expectations, rather than pursuing a traditional job. Retiring as a senior NCO, prioritizing the needs of others was standard practice. Just as I have in the past, I will keep serving where I can positively impact others' lives.
