We started this business because we are passionate about building. After working with a general contractor, we realized conventional construction lacked excitement. We noticed too much waste, inefficiency in homes from the beginning, toxic materials, and a lack of longevity. We wanted to create a company that we could take pride in. In March 2008, we founded Santa Cruz Green Builders, focusing on building homes and workspaces that are better for the environment and their occupants.

Spencer Keenan earned his degree in Industrial Design from San Francisco State. His studies gave him the ability to bring designs to fruition and to solve problems encountered throughout the process. These skills, along with the beauty of California's central coast and his desire to create, inspired him to enter the field of green building in Santa Cruz.

Co-owner Taylor, raised on Kauai, has always had a strong interest in construction. When he was just 8, he constructed his first building, a tree fort crafted from salvaged wood, complete with a drawbridge, bedroom, screened porch, and garage. After earning a politics degree from UCSC, Taylor furthered his building interests by working with a general contractor in Santa Cruz. His passion for green building grew stronger and more motivating. Currently, as a Certified Green Building Professional, Taylor applies his expertise to every project we undertake.
