Originally founded in 1964, the business was known as Hayes Valley Hardware, Heating and Plumbing in San Francisco. In 1966, the company transitioned from Filmore to its current location at the Southwood Shopping Center on Orange and El Camino in South San Francisco.
While attending Arch Bishop Riordan High School, Denis started working after school and on weekends at Southwood Hardware, Plumbing and Heating, where he supported his father and his partner, Bill Sylvia. In 1981, after graduating from Riordan High School, Denis took over a partnership in the company from Bill Sylvia. He then dedicated himself to full-time work in the company.
