The business began in 1964 as Hayes Valley Hardware, Heating and Plumbing in San Francisco. The business moved to the Southwood Shopping Center at Orange and El Camino in South San Francisco in 1966, leaving Filmore behind.
While attending Arch Bishop Riordan High School, Denis started working after school and on weekends at Southwood Hardware, Plumbing and Heating, assisting his father and his partner, Bill Sylvia. Upon graduating from Riordan High School in 1981, Denis acquired a partnership in the company from Bill Sylvia. He then dedicated himself to full-time work in the company.
