Very expensive just to identify a leak. The leak was located behind an existing HVAC duct that needed removing before the leak could be repaired. Instead of coming out to remove the duct as discussed the pervious day, I was offered a quote of $2400 to remove and replace the entire duct work. The technician claimed they didn't due duct modification, contrary to what I was told the day before. They had even lined up a plumber to come after the HVAC tech to fix the problem, so the quote made no sense. Terrible service.
Honestly, this company seems like a scam to take advantage of customers who are desperate to fix HVAC or plumbing issues.
I wouldn't recommend 447 dollars later within two days after the electrican was here the problem is worse!!!! Spend your money elsewere also I never received a receipt never was emailed!!!!
Emergency 24/7 service is a joke. I had an emergency plumbing problem with sewage backing up in my basement. I had called for service and received an appointment from, 3:30-6:00 pm on 8/13/22. No one ever called or showed up for the appointment. There is no reason to schedule an appointment when you cannot come to the house. Total scam!~
Nicholas S.On June 22, 2022 these morons came to diagnose why my shower stayed too hot and determined I needed a new mixer cartridge. Fast forward to August 3... no calls, no comms, no updates. Tried calling them only to sit on hold and then mysteriously disconnected after 20 minutes. Finally, they gathered the courage to tell me THEIR ONE SUPPLIER Ferguson does not have the part and it's unknown When they will have the part. One supplier?? Really??? If you're in DC, do yourself a favor and use any one of the locally owned plumbers and not these thieves!
My Dad needed a simple toilet replacement, since he was upgrading his toilet to a new chair-height model. We didn't have much time to shop around, so Dad told me to just hire Michael & Sons. When I called them, they wouldn't give any sort of estimate over the phone - not even a ballpark range, but they warned that if they came out to the house and then we declined their on-the-spot estimate, they would charge a $69.00 fee! This was a big red flag, but since we were short on time, we hired them anyway. On the day of our appointment, our technician (not a licensed plumber) was extremely late! He didn't arrive until 2 1/2 hours after the end of our appointment window. When he finally arrived, he showed me a list of fixed prices in his phone that he was required to charge for each type of service! To be clear, Michael & Sons has a fixed price for replacing an owner-supplied toilet that all their technicians are required to charge, so there was absolutely no excuse for them refusing to disclose that to me over the phone when I asked! And by the way, their prices are nearly double the going rate, which is why they don't want to tell you any pricing over the phone. They want to get the technician out to your house before you find out how much of a ripoff they are, so they can at least try to stick you with a $69.00 fee when you turn down their outrageous prices!
Art H.I have never had a good experience with Michael and Son. My latest experience was when they came out to give a quote for repairing a gas leak. They were the most expensive by far out of five estimates. They said they would have to bust up my patio flooring and replace an entire segment of the pipes, leaving me with the cost to replace all the flooring. They claimed that Washington Gas would not pass the inspection if they didn't replace the entire gas line which as pure BS.
Their business strategy in my experience on 3 separate occasions for large jobs has always been to gouge the customer by selling the largest scope of work possible; refusing to discuss or give quotes for alternative less expensive solutions, and making up reasons like ""parts no longer available due to age"".
They bank on the fact that customers are not very knowledgeable; don't do any research, and rarely get additional estimates.
Michael and Son's rely on heavy advertising to ensure you are the first and only company most consumers hear about.
In addition, from what friends in the biz have told me, their pricing for quotes is never based on parts and labor; rather, it is based on a strategy to get the customer to spend as much as possible and is based entirely on how much knowledge, or lack thereof, the customer exhibits.
LET ME EDIT MY REVIEW: AFTER 3 REPAIR VISITS IN FOUR DAYS FROM MICHAEL & SON, MY HOME FILLED UP WITH A FOG THAT WAS ODORLESS AND WE ARE NOW WAITING FOR A 4TH VISIT. GOD FORBID WE'RE ASLEEP AND NEVER WAKE UP FROM WHAT IS EMANATING FROM OUR HVAC SYSTEM. PERHAPS, TO SHUT US UP, THEY'D HAVE US DIE IN OUR HOME. I would give them no stars if the system permitted. Since 2012, our HVAC unit has consistently broken down. We've had several band-aids put on a unit that any honorable business would have replaced years ago. Again, during yet another heatwave, as in the past, the system ceased to work. Repair came again, which makes 3x in less than 12 months and a couple of months prior to that, as well, for a roaring a/c unit (more than once) then for the system not connecting to the thermostat, then to replace the thermostat; no cool air, no heat. Today, on an emergency basis at a cost of $169, the repair person could NOT get the system functioning properly and we are still sitting in real-feel temperatures of 99-degrees. Certainly, Michael & Son will string me along until my service warranty runs out in 6 weeks and then try to sell me another unit. Not in this day and age! Apparently, if I can't, they can't either!
Taylor B.Michael & Sons saved us last night! The plug to our water heater broke off and water gushed everywhere just an hour before we were having a party. The rep who answered was incredibly kind as I was panicking, as I had called a few other plumbers and no one could come out that day. The rep assured me that they considered no hot water an emergency and they would figure out a way to get someone there. The plumber came a few hours later, before the window given, and fixed the entire problem in less than 30m for a very reasonable price. He was lovely and definitely got a round of applause from the party on the way out. I would go to them first for any emergency in the future.
We had a well pump replaced the end of May. After the replacement we could not run the dishwasher and washing machine at the same time. We lost so much water pressure. We called Michael and Sons and told them about the problem. They finally came out a month later and put in a bigger pump but was not big enough to fix the issue. The original plumber that came out never checked the size of the pump that should have been put in. We have been a customer since at least 2008. We have spent over 50,000 bucks to them for various jobs. They will never get another penny from me. I AM DONE with THEM
We've used Michael & Sons before, and assumed they would be perfect to replace an old mechanical thermostat in a single-stage system, with a non-programmable digital Emerson. We bought the thermostat and had it already, and only wanted help with some confusing wiring. We figured the $90 ""diagnostic"" charge, then maybe $50. It would be nice if the ""diagnostic"" charge was part of the final charges, but no. That's separate. Okay, but at least it makes business sense.
When the ""diagnostic"" was completed, the estimate to do the installation was $288.75. Then there was North Carolina tax of $27.39. So including the ""diagnostic"" charge and tax they wanted $405.14. Are You Kidding Me?!!
This was the last time we'll ever call Michael & Sons. It's sad that the corporate leaders are now so greedy for money they no longer have any interest in customers. The technician was really excellent (they all are!), and was as shocked as we were at the computer-generated estimate. He checked with the office, and was told that's the price.
Good-bye Michael & Son. Alas; for we knew you when you were a decent company.
