In 1920, Vearl Manwill prepared his horse and wagon, filled with tools, carbide lights, and a selection of pipes to begin a journey that would lead him to numerous farmhouses to implement “modern” carbide lighting and piping. These installations contributed to the first indoor lighting systems in history. Eventually, Vearl opted to establish himself in Salt Lake City and opened a plumbing business from his garage on 2700 South. In 1943, he established his first showroom on 300 South in Salt Lake City. His establishment was a comprehensive hardware store offering washers, dryers, and even jewelry. He acquired one of the first TVs in Salt Lake City. While the TV only showed black and white pictures, it became the talk of the town and drew crowds of people. In time, Vearl no longer needed to sell jewelry and appliances to focus on his expertise—plumbing and heating products. The operation is currently overseen by his grandson.

Today, Jim Manwill, the third generation, runs the business. Jim was raised in the family business doing everything from digging trenches to plumbing new homes, performing repairs, and selling HVAC equipment. Currently, Jim leads a team of over 40 trained service experts focused on delivering exceptional customer service, reliable products, and quality craftsmanship. Jim received the ""Circle of Excellence"" award. Most recent honors include ""Best of State"" from 2011 to 2015 along with the Angie's List Super Service Award for 2008 through 2015.

Also part of the team is Jim's nephew, Brian Jackson, a fourth-generation member. Brian has worked full-time since 1994. He currently serves as the general manager and oversees daily operations. Manwill Plumbing and Heating looks forward to the future and is preparing to maintain its leadership position.

My first experience with Manwill was at my house and they did a decent job (they scuffed one of my doors up, then said they would clean it, but never did). I figured I would try them at my business. First time they sent someone, he had a horrible attitude. He was extremely grumpy and seemed to be completely put off by the fact he had to work. I asked Manwill to send us someone different the second time around for some more work. This time this sent us someone who had no idea what he was doing. He needed to fix one leaky hose bib. 2 hours later he said he couldn't do the job and left. We'll be calling someone other than Manwill next time.
Added a star due to owner reaching out to me to get to root of issue.

Communication is good. Keeping promises is not. Asked upfront about pricing. Was told $35 for the initial visit plus $24 for each 15 minutes. On a Monday afternoon, a tech came, had a quick look, and said we needed to get a faucet handle to go along with the Delta shower cartridge we already had. He said we wouldn't be charged for his visit, but we would when the handle was in and ready to go. He said he'd just come back when we had the handle. The next day, we let Manwill know we had the handle. We had to wait until the following Friday. A different tech was sent. We were charged $157 for 42 minutes of work. When we asked about the bill, we were told it included the first visit.

The person who came to give estimate gave us all the information we needed but promised way much more than what the installers could do. The furnace was installed without a duct work and is so noisy that we have to halt our conversation till the cycle completes.

We had an emergency plumbing situation at our house two days ago. These guys came right away. They also had the part we needed on the truck so no time lost. The technician was friendly, professional, quick, and clean. Our final price for the job ended up being almost half of what another place estimated it would cost. We were happy with Manwill.

I have used Manwill several times for my very old rental property in SLC. Being remote, it would be very easy for any company to take advantage of the fact I am not onsite. In all service engagements Brian and his team have communicated clearly and frequently. Their estimates have been reasonable and accurate and my plumbing issues resolved quickly and professionally. This is a great company with honest and hard working employees. My only complaint is they are so busy it can be hard to get them out as soon as I would have liked. They have always juggled their schedule to do the best they can, but I hope they add some staff to better support emergency call-outs. Thank you Manwill!

Manwill does a fantastic job. Steve came out just recently to service our furnaces and was very professional. I highly recommend them and I'm confident that you will like them as well

Not cool. Was quoted a $49 service fee to check my AC. Ended up charging me $115 and didn't do ANY repair. They were going to come back another day (5 days later) to do the actual work. Buyer beware! Service fees are HIGH!!!

I would never use this company again and I highly recommend that anyone else steer clear from Manwill. This company does not prioritize the customer. They just try to get as much money out of you as they can. A technician came out when we originally called about our A/C not working, and he refused to go down into our crawl space (which is where the furnace, etc are located). Because of that, he was unable to correctly diagnose the problem. He claimed he was ""too old"" to go into the crawl space. Regardless, he believed he fixed the problem and left. Later that day our A/C stopped working, again. We called Manwill and requested they come back but it was another three (very hot) days before they could make it. The next technician came out and was actually willing to go in the crawl space. Turns out that is where the problem originated and he was able to fix it very quickly (thanks!). I called the company to let them know about the previous technician's error (and quite simply, his incompetence) and they were not willing to refund us for the original visit. Manwill hires incompetent technicians with little to no work ethic. Needless to say, they don't deserve my business ever again, or yours.

Something has changed with this company and they have gone downhill. Please be careful if you have a rental. I have been using Manwill for over a decade. However, over the last few years I have not been happy with their service.

For example, the tenants called them for a clogged kitchen sink. The plumber went in the process broke the P-trap and had to come back the next day. Manwill charged for both visits. Not once through this process they called me. They only contact me when they wanted me to pay the bill. On the description it indicated that the piping was a plugged because it was old. Yeah right. Obviously whatever was plugging the pipe was caused by the renters. I can understand the 1.5"" pipe breaking for being old but not clogged because of age. Who are we kidding. The tenants had a similar compliant earlier in the year with the dishwasher. Fortunately, I sent Sears and they found a rag clogging the dishwasher drain. I'm glad I did not call Manwill for that service.

Response to 7/13 comment: The limit of $250 was established by me after the fact. I had called twice to inform them that I wanted to be in the loop. At that time we established the limit

UPDATE:
I was contacted in person by Manwill and they did apologize for the miscommunication between the staff. They did give us a partial refund on the cost of the service that reflected earlier expectations and grateful they wanted to make things right. I have updated my rating to reflect our satisfaction with their customer service and work well done.
----------------------

I initially contacted Manwill over the weekend through Yelp and had a few exchanges with Jim and he said he could contact me Monday when he knew the schedule. I didn't hear back so I called him Wednesday and after being on hold for 8 minutes and having the receptionist put me back on hold 3 times, I set up a consult for Friday morning.

Well i'm slightly disappointed in our customer experience, while the work they did today fixed our problem, I didn't expect that they would actually do the work today. I was told over the phone someone would come and look at it (assuming to give us a quote), then the work could be done early next week. Unfortunately only my wife was home and they just did the work. It turned out the guy had some problems running a new wire for our thermostat so it took him 2 hours. So we ended up paying $275 for labor and $2.55 for a wire. I understand problems can't be foreseen before work is started but I wish I would have had time to consider a quote beforehand. Maybe it's just me but it seems a little pricey. I guess they could have communicated better with my wife on the quote and within their own team since it was different people who did the work and who I talked to on the phone.

Otherwise I do appreciate that they contacted me over the weekend, and while I haven't been able to see the work yet, i'm sure it's a job well done and may consider changing my rating.
