Owner Andrew Dobbins of Intelligent Design Air Conditioning and Heating, transitioned out of the Marine Corps in 2002 and shortly thereafter entered the HVAC industry. Almost immediately excelled in cost estimation and system design while working for one of Tucson's biggest companies. In that role, Andrew focused on residential marketing, product expertise, and the design aspects of a heating and cooling company.

After four years, Andrew sought to expand his education and experience. He learned about heat load engineering, logistics, duct design, and the details of the new construction custom home market, as well as how a large service company handles logistics to maintain quality and customer satisfaction.

At present, Andrew is one of the most acclaimed and sought-after engineers for residential air conditioning and heating systems in Tucson. He holds EPA certification as a technician.

Well, I left a message on Saturday saying I needed a plumber. I spoke with an actual person...left my name, phone numbers, address...told him my plumbing was backed up and I could not use the shower, washer, etc. Sunday I called back a different person answered who was less than helpful...no they do not come out on weekends unless it is a real emergency. By this time I was so unhappy, I am finding someone else. Why else would I call if I didn't need someone!

I recently wrote a review about an experience I had with Intelligent Design, and they were quick to follow up, own where they had missed the mark, and helped me spot a leak in my coil that the AC company provided by my home warranty had missed, saving me a ton! Although my initial experience with Intelligent Design was not the best, they listened to my concerns, and turned my experience around by being honest, genuine and thorough.

Nope.
When my AC went out I contacted several different companies looking for someone who could figure out the problem.
These guys were one of two that had free estimates... so that seemed like a good place to start... and they got to me within like 3hrs, all good things.
BUT THATS WHERE THE GOOD STUFF ENDS.
Rob Soza came to my house while I was sitting with a family member in hospice who passed that evening. He talked to my brother and to me on the phone and stated that the breaker was out and he needed to replace it before he could figure out what was up (ok, that makes sense) and that he would cut me a deal and only charge me $450!?!?!!!!
Ok. No.
But maybe he means a part on the AC? A breaker is like $20 at Home Depot... so I called him. OMG, what an a$$. How rude can you be when a potential customer called and asked for clarification? I thought maybe he would understand since I had been at hospice, but no. He was irritated that I thought it was weird to charge $450 to change a breaker and told me I could do it and deal with the 220V electric if it was that easy and that he was giving me a discount because of the amount of work that needed done on my system, which wasn't what he was told when he took the call (it was supposed to be easier somehow).
WTF? REALLY?
So the next morning I called the manager/owner (whatever) and double checked- after all, I had been distracted the day before and I wasn't actually there when he was... Maybe I really didn't understand what Robby wanted to do for $450. They sent me a quote over to change a 60amp breaker that showed $450 in parts waived and $250 in labor!??!!?!?
Again, NOPE.
But it's Friday morning, I'm without an AC, and it's supposed to be 102 on Sunday... so I still ask him to put me on the schedule and the owner/manager guy promises me that the scheduler will call me right back...
NOTHING. NOT A SINGLE PERSON BOTHERS TO CALL!
I waited it out before I posted this... Monday afternoon when Rudy from Mantra Electric (who changed the breaker for $30) has my broken AC pulled off my roof NOT TILL THEN do I get a call from them.
I'm so glad I didn't wait for them to call on Friday, otherwise I would have had to take my family to a hotel for the weekend.

MORAL OF THE STORY: DON'T TRUST A WORD THESE PEOPLE TELL YOU.
If they feel justified charging me somewhere between $250 and $600 to pop a new breaker in (a $30 job by other hands), how much are they ripping you off?

Just an update... because the internet is awesome... in response to the bogus claims by the company.
1. They did not leave and return with a breaker
2. $250 was only to change a breaker
3. Rob was right, the breaker needed replaced to figure out what was wrong... but he couldn't do it and left my family waiting for him to return for 4 days.
AND... Here's my proof... the estimate for the breaker.

I'm serious internet. Don't trust a word that these people say.

Rob S. was excellent. Was very professional and kept us informed as to what he was doing. We were having issues with our air conditioning and he found the problem that two others could not. Would recommend !!!

Potential Intelligent Design (ID) customers may find this of interest.

As you will see, this review refers to an incident which occurred approximately 7 months ago (My mistake for not responding immediately after the service call). It wouldn't have ""re-surfaced"" had I not spoken with a friend, on the East Coast, who has an air conditioning and heating installation/repair business.

We discussed the maintenance agreement which I have with ID, and how it came about. In April, 2015, I responded to an Angie's List offer for a $69 seasonal A/C or Furnace Inspection and up to 2 pounds of refrigerant.
The technician (Daniel V.), who came out was great. He replaced the insulation on the low voltage wiring on both outdoor units (pack rats had eaten). The units were cleaned and thoroughly inspected. He installed safety overflow kits, went over everything with me and showed me where the fan motors (still under warranty) were leaking oil and needed replacement, which he addressed. Everything checked out well as shown in his written report. He ask if I would be interested in a maintenance plan (no hard sell). I agreed to one believing the service just provided was SOP for ID. My friend agreed that it looked as if I purchased a ""sound"" plan and the $250 charge for the motor replacements were in the range (near East Coast prices).

I called in December, 2016 for a ""winter""furnace tune up and requested that Daniel be the Tech. I was told he was no longer with ID. Josef, the technician who came out, explained everything, and was excellent. The units checked out well and I received an e-mail report, indicating that, the next day.

In June, 2017, I called ID to schedule an A/C check up. I asked for Josef and was told he too was no longer there. The Technician who came out, was modestly friendly, didn't say much and explained nothing though I asked him a number of questions. I assumed he was checking everything and would go over a check list upon completion. Bad assumption. When finished, he advised me that he had replaced a Mainline Starter, and an Inline Current Controller. He ""played"" with his calculator and announced that the total came to $591 (with the plan discount). Even though requested, he did not provide an itemized price list of the items replaced. I asked for the defective parts, and am glad that I did. He then advised me that I needed additional work, which he could handle for about $2,000. He provided no requested paperwork, but said the report would be e-mailed to me the next day. It never came.
I called your office to obtain a break down of the charges, which were e-mailed to me. The SHVAC3P (Inline Current Controller) was $378, and the SHVAC2S (Mainline Starter) was $213.
When I shared this information with my friend, his immediate response was ""YOU HAVE BEEN RIPPED OFF/SCREWED OVER"".

He helped me go on-line to find that the Inline Current Controller is a Capacitor- Genteq 97F9973-4.5uf + 7.5uf, 440VAC Genteq Replacement Round Dual Run Capacitor (or similar) available from Amazon for $17.30 (free shipping). The ""family"" of these, range from the above to approximately $35. The Replacement for the Trane ""Starter"" was a Single Pole/1 Pole 30 Amp, 24 Volt Coil Condenser Contactor which is listed as $16.69 at Amazon and less on e-Bay. The family of these ranged from the above to approximately $27.00.

To sustain themselves and grow, all businesses (mine included) must turn a reasonable profit. However, charges of 10 X cost are ""off the chart"". In reading the ID reviews (almost all excellent), I found that some other folks had experiences similar to mine. It would appear that the Technicians, at least some, are free to set ""their"" price. If that is not the case, I'd have thought that your office would have flagged it.

I signed the maintenance agreement based on Daniels outstanding job, ID's reputation and that the business was owned by a fellow Vet.That appears to have been a mistake. Maybe a ""heads up"" to those considering ID, is in order.

Jake came for a maintenance contract check up. He was very polite. He worked fast but was also very thorough in his work. I also felt that he was honest with me about the state of my system. I would request Jake next time. I have been impressed with of their technicians though.

Jake & David showed up on time. Very Professional, but found service very over priced. Had two easily accessible wires in AC chewed by pack rats. Original wires joined back together by striping ends and covering with wire nut. Total time maybe 5 min tops. Price? $105 EACH. Other minor work also done, again very over priced. Clean evap coil $251 about 15 min work. I called management. They said they use flat rate pricing no matter what the repair is. He said would take ONE of the $105 charged off. Sent another invoice but nothing had changed. Would definitely not use them again.

It's been a while since the last time I used Intelligent, why? Simple I had a contract with them for maintenance, have system checked for summer and then winter. Well the last time I paid for the maintenance plan, I didn't see or hear from them to do follow up work, or even renew contract. And it's not my responsibility to call them to remind them, which in the past I had to do.
So now it's time to replace my central air, and this company is most definitely not on my list for quotes.

The owner of Intelligent Design Air Conditioning and heating called me to apologize for the very poor experience that I had with their tech. He said that the tech did not represent his company, was with the company only a week, and subsequently was released from his duties. I felt that Andrew, the owner, was sincere in his apology. He also quickly refunded me for the diagnosis fee I paid. I was happy with that because I felt I paid to be abused, but now at least I was refunded. Thank you Andrew. One more thing I wanted to mention that the license suspension was for a license not related to air conditioning. Their license is current and has not been suspended. So overall, ID was very quick to respond to my call during the hottest time of year, and the people in the office was very nice to deal with. The tech was out of control, but it sounds like the owner has corrected that situation and has acted strongly to correct any problems. I appreciate that and wish them well.
