Company Overview

Founded by Larry, GEM Plumbing and Heating is a family-owned company based in Lincoln, Rhode Island. Alongside his wife Gloria, Larry launched operating from the garage at home, using just a lone truck to provide plumbing and heating work to local customers. While nurturing their kids, Gloria managed plumbing calls for Larry from the house. In 1982, after graduating, Larry, Leonard, and Edward, along with their brother Anthony Gemma, redirected the company in a different direction. With a goal to offer authentic 24-hour emergency service, each son purchased a vehicle and joined their father to broaden plumbing services in the local area. In 1997, Gem Plumbing & Heating increased its staff to 40-plus employees while fostering a growing clientele in the service division and accepting larger construction jobs.

BEWARE OF THE ABSURDLY OUTRAGEOUS OVERPRICING BY GEM PLUMBING! Two technicians came and one of them spent less than half an hour to install a $9.99 (at the local hardware store) capacitor and presented me with a $920 bill! A quick search online reveals the job is worth about $175 altogether, which sounds about right. There is a pattern here, another reviewer at this site had the same experience. I sent GEM technicians packing and I suggest YOU SAVE YOUR TIME AND NOT CONTACT THIS COMPANY, their overpricing puts them in the category of scam. I completely agree with another reviewer on this site who said ""100% recommend shutting Gems down"". Enough said.

Gem is way overpriced charged 720 dollars for a 45 minute repair of a pipe. It Wa on a Sunday and pipe leaking but way overpriced. If you have any other choice get some one else. Took advantage of a leaking pipe would not recommend

Extremely angry at the fact that their A/C tech took advantage of a situation..I had to go to work and my wife was home when he arrived over an hour later than they projected. He (Jason C) never told her much it was going cost to change a Capacitor on a Amana A/C condenser. He changed it, gave her the bill and left! We expected $150 service fee, but the whole bill came out to $1010!! For 15 minutes of work, for a Capacitor that costs $16 on Amazon or $31 at Ace Hardware... the exact same Capacitor! That is a huge mark up and completely unnecessary on taking advantage of a woman. If he would have told her how much it was going to cost? She would've said absolutely not, I have called to complain and spoke to a Shirley (she was nice!) but so far nothing has come out of this situation. I will be contacting the BBB and maybe even go further. I have noticed that on many reviews this has happened before to many people that deal with GEM, they completely lost my trust and respect and of course my business.
I will not stop until this is resolved! I will rewrite my review every day if I have too!
This can't happen again and should not happen to people who put their trust in a business that supposedly has integrity.
It's been 2 weeks now! And yet No Manager has called to explain the reason for such a high cost, I will keep updates coming.

CENTRAL AIR INSTALL AND DUCTWORK

I first met GEM at the RI Home and Garden Show in April. I was lured in by their overly large display and promise of a $50 Amazon gift card for keeping my appointment. THEY called the day before said appointment to reschedule. Fine.

Day of the appointment, salesman had great communication, was on time, and described all the details. He presented two options, which appeared to be fair and reasonable, and didn't push for the hard sell. (No Amazon gift card in hand.) I researched in depth and discussed these options with my husband. We were impressed by their ""No surprises guarantee"" (wait for the big surprise), the 1 year satisfaction guarantee, and all their 'numerous' awards. We agreed upon one and signed the contract. I paid the 50% deposit and was told the ""duct man"" would come out to take measurements, although the salesman took many photos and measurements, but whatever. 30 minutes after the scheduled appointment time ""duct man"" still had not shown up, no phone call, nothing. I had to call GEM to find out where he was. When he arrived an hour late, no apology, nothing. He took his measurements and even added extra vents that I was assured the equipment could handle and would NOT cost any extra. Ok, great. (Still no gift card.)

The DAY before the scheduled install, I received a call from the salesman to tell me they would require $9,000 extra for larger equipment. (SURPRISE!!!) I said absolutely not and then it was crickets. Classic bait and switch.

I had to call the office and the person I spoke with who has nothing to do with this sale had to deal with this mess. She tried to save the sale, but when I presented their own ""No surprises guarantee"" and the fact that them changing equipment renders the contract null and void, she agreed. When I asked about a termination fee or penalty, I was told, ""No, because we hadn't even ordered the equipment yet."" WHAT?!?! The day before installation and no equipment had been ordered?!? Ultimately, my deposit was refunded, which is about the only good thing I can say about GEM.

And, I still don't have my Amazon gift card.

the window for GEM to come to my house was 12-4 , no show and claimed they called me and I hung up. BS, and if the call was dropped uh you call back maybe leave a message. Nope nothing, I have young grandkids and an old dog staying with me in this hot house. Awful customer service. And when I called at 4 they asked me if I wanted to reschedule? How fucking stupid a question was that? probably need to go to a hotel, will gem pay for that ? And I asked for management to call me. Crickets!

Super Expensive! They installed a whole house water filter that we had purchased and charged $1700 just for labor and a few parts and it took about 2 hrs. When they were done, one of the plumbing connections was leaking, and so was the one of the filter's connections. So I got a new replacement filter and they came back a few days later and charged us another $578 to change it out, taking less than an hour. It works fine but, boy, they socked it to us. They said that they were giving us a senior discount, but it ended up costing $2278 + the cost of the filter unit. I don't think there was more than $200 for the fittings, so they charged more than $650 per hour. One guy did most of the work, and had a trainee/assistant who mostly watched.

My husband called someone to come out and look at our AC unit. 10 minutes later we are quoted 6000-10,000 to repair. He declined considering we could just buy a new one. Was told the 10 minutes he was there was a $500.00 charge. OUTRAGEOUS!!!!! DO NOT RECOMMEND. Shop around before wasting your money on this company.

Edit: Just found out he told my husband he could smell gas so we may have a gas leak too. The FF came and said there is no leak and most likely just trying to get more money. Disgraceful and Disgusting.
