One of the benefits of working with a small business is that you get pride in the work that you don't usually get from the big chains. I had a basement flooding issue at 10pm, and James had a guy there within the hour. You're going to have to pay the upcharge when you need service in the middle of the night (and James quoted me the price difference between somebody coming over ASAP and somebody coming over at 9am), but in my case the extra cost was well worth it. These guys are my new go-to plumbers for drain issues!

It's unfortunate that I have to write this review but I want others to know about my most recent interaction with James. I really wanted to use this company, especially since it's black-owned and the price quoted was reasonable. But James's attitude and unprofessionalism made that impossible.

During my phone conversation with him last night, I explained that I wanted to have him come over to my tenant-occupied property and formally confirm his diagnosis (he had given me a diagnosis of my water heater in a previous phone conversation) before he proceeded to work. In all my years working with roofers, plumbers, HVAC personnel, etc., it's never been an issue. It's called a diagnostic appointment and usually entails a fee (i.e. diagnostic fee and/or travel fee). It's an industry standard. But it was an issue for James.

As soon I as explained to him what I wanted, he took offense, as if I was questioning his abilities and experience. He made sure to tell me he had over 29 years of experience and if his phone diagnosis was wrong, then I should be the one to tell him what the problem was with my water heater. Wow.

James then asked me how much he quoted me during our first phone conversation. I told him around $600 (I honestly couldn't remember the exact figure), and then he told me it was $628. Why ask me for the quote if you already knew the answer? From there, he told me that his diagnostic fee was $100 and I confirmed I was happy to pay it. But then James told me that if I was going to bring him all the way out to Riverdale Park just to do a diagnostic, it would be ""a complete waste of his time,"" even though I had already agreed to pay the diagnostic fee (if necessary) and I had already explained I wanted him to repair my water heater. All I wanted was for him to actually physically inspect the water heater and confirm what he already assumed was the issue.

Edit: I forgot to add: the phone conversation ended with James saying he had another call and that he would call me back. He obviously did not.

James, it's a shame you took my simple request as me questioning your abilities and experience as a plumber. I will make sure that no one in my
personal and professional network uses your services.

James scheduled a two-hour window with me and he showed up on time. He fixed the problem in less than an hour. The price was very reasonable and he also offered a discount from the Yelp home page.

I can't say enough good about James at the Drain Fighter. We had a tricky main line drain clog on a holiday. Two technicians from a national chain tried to clear it and failed. James came hours after we contacted him on the same holiday and had the drain cleared in 20 minutes. Professional, effective, and completely reasonable pricing. I recommend them whole heartedly.
