Company Overview

I handle placement, maintenance, and restoration of hot water systems, faucets, lavatories, filtration systems, gas seismic safety valves, instantaneous water heaters, and additionally conduct drain maintenance, spa tub maintenance, pipe fixing, gas piping, and water line fixing and setup. I focus to deliver a reliably superior standard of service, rooted in thorough assessment of issues and clear communication, along with meticulous implementation of the needed services.

I earned my certification at the suggestion of my first employer, Bright Winn in San Francisco, for whom I was employed over a decade. Afterward worked for eight years with the founder of Lipsey/Mill Valley Plumbing, while supporting a small but growing customer list as well.

The shutting down of the company in the early 2000s motivated me to operate Daystar Plumbing as my primary focus, maintaining service in the Marin area, SF, and San Mateo Counties as I had with my former employer, and to maintain guarantee work with Kohler, Bosch, and additional manufacturers.

I am thankful to both men for the valuable lessons and wisdom I gained from their guidance.

I utilized my completely outfitted Daystar service truck to serve Mike's customer base, quickly switching magnetic signs for the two brands as required.

I maintain very friendly terms with both of them, and previous coworkers of those businesses.

I started doing plumbing for a neighbor, Bright Winn, in 1982 after coming back to the Bay Area from my teaching stint in Asia for two and a half.

I am passionate about the environment, and have made multiple journeys with a group to lobby the U.S. Congress, the administration and the World Bank regarding sustainable forestry and the environment at my personal cost.

I participate in environment-oriented issues, actively opposing harmful projects, and am currently participating in Pacificans for Sustainable Development, Pacifica Climate Committee, & the city council-appointed ""Climate Action Task Force"".

I enjoy reading ""Scientific American magazine"", ""the publication Scientific American Mind"", ""Science News"", and ""Parabola"" in their entirety with each release.

Knowledgeable but charges $75.00 (that is $20 off from $95 for mentioning yelp) for consultation and examining your shower. The consultation and exam lasts less than 10 minutes and spend more time writing your invoice. I have never encountered this kind of service . Even first time MD consultations, therapists, dentists, and other services are free.
And no, I am not a competitor.
One star for charging $75 consultation/exam.

With credit to Kurt F. for his review below, I couldn't say it better:

""Timothy from Daystar is a star, and is the first call I make for any plumbing issue.

He has serviced our SF home a few times over the years, and because it's plumbing, we always need service in a hurry. He is always incredibly responsive. He's also very personable and smart. Tells me more about my waterworks than I'll ever remember...but it's greatly appreciated. It shows he really cares about his clients, long after the house call is made.""

Timothy was originally recommended to me by another well-regarded plumbing company because he has particular expertise with Kohler products and that was what I needed. Since then he has been my first and only call for any plumbing problems. Whatever the problem is, he has always been able to fix it - and to do so in the most cost effective way. There is no reason to call anyone else.

After getting stood up by another local plumber, I called Timothy of Daystar Plumbing after reading good reviews on Yelp.

He was courteous, thorough, professional and showed up on time Because the job ended up being simpler that expected, he charged me less than what he quoted on the phone.

I'm happy with his work and will definitely call Daystar again next time I need a plumber.

Our complicated, electric Kohler toilet ceased functioning. And since I had watched it being installed 3 or 4 years ago, I knew this wasn't an ordinary plumbing job. So we went directly to Kohler to get a recommendation for a local plumber. Timothy at DayStar was one of two in the Bay Area.

Turns out he had worked on a few of these toilets before. We made an appointment and he was right on time. And he had spoken to the tech people at Kohler before arriving, to ensure we were on the right track and would have the right parts in hand. I assisted with the repair from time to time, as the toilet is rather heavy and needs to be re-installed gently and accurately.

Timothy replaced the faulty shut-off valve pretty quickly. Problem solved! But then we ran into trouble re-installing the main toilet piece onto the base - no fault of his; it was a problem that existed from when it was first installed. Another call to Kohler tech, and another problem solved (and it's quieter than before too).

A careful, thoughtful, and interesting guy. We're pleased.

PS - If you only have one bathroom in your house/apartment (fortunately, we have two), I'd suggest thinking twice about an electric toilet. If it breaks or you have a power failure, guess what, it gets very inconvenient very soon.

I've had opportunities over the years to work with a number of plumbers, and never have I met anybody as engaging and courteous as Timothy. He smoothly swayed me from an erroneous decision regarding a hot water heater replacement over the phone which would have cost me a small fortune.

He proceeded to come by for a site evaluation on a Sunday with no promise of business nor remittance. Upon gaining the bid, he deftly replaced the failed unit the very next day with skill, precision, and practiced ease.

Timothy seems a rare breed in the plumbing industry, and will remain my go-to person for future needs. I highly recommend him!

I first encountered Timothy on a desperate Sunday afternoon when my father and I were trying to switch out the faucets in one of my bathrooms. What should have been a fairly straightforward home improvement project went badly awry thanks to the shoddy construction of my 80s-era condo. But that's a whole different story.

After hours of collecting a not-so-slow drip in tupperware while we attempted to fix the leaking valves ourselves, I finally cried ""uncle"" and called Timothy, based on the other Yelp reviews I read. He's the first plumber I've ever called-- I grew up in a do-it-yourself type family. Let me tell you, I'm sold on not doing it myself anymore!

I reached Timothy's sympathetic and helpful wife who had him call me within 10 minutes. Despite it being a Sunday (and an uncharacteristically beautiful and warm Pacifica day to boot), Timothy came right over. Once he arrived, he immediately took charge of the situation, and I knew we were in very good hands.

Timothy was able to replace the leaking valve and get the faucet installed. Then he helped diagnose a problem with a shower head we were having trouble with, and he had just the right obscure part in his van to fix that up as well. And all the while, he had my father following him around talking to him about what he was doing and asking questions. My overall experience with Timothy was that he was clean, knowledgeable, efficient, responsible and responsive, very respectful and courteous, and also patient. He'll talk to you about what he's doing as much as you want to know-- or as little, if you are not interested!

We had to call Timothy back two days later when the valve broke on the second sink install. This time, there was no leaking and no hours of trying to fix it ourselves. As soon as I saw we were going to have a problem, I just called Timothy. He made time in his schedule to accommodate me the same day, and my experience with him was much the same as before.

From now on, any plumbing issue will be Timothy's to solve! What a relief!

As far as price, I really can't say anything much about it because I don't have comparative experience. My feeling about him is that he's a person of integrity, and so I trust that his prices are fair. He's also very detailed in explaining how the price is being assessed. I guess on this front I would just say that plumbing is not for the faint of wallet, but I felt that Timothy's expertise, efficiency, and professionalism were worth the price.

Timothy came over to evaluate a gutter downspout/ drain line/outflow pipe blockage rootering situation that I faced. He carefully looked over the problem and said that it wasn't a repair that he normally addresses. He gave me the name of a trusted colleague who might be better suited for the task.

Timothy then looked over two small kitchen problems. A faucet issue could be delayed because it was functional and therefore optional. I also suspected a major $$$ dishwasher repair need. He probed the symptoms and JIGGLED THE WALL PLUG FULLY INTO PLACE, enabling the appliance to then do its thing. Amazing how essential electricity actually is to the functioning of modern appliances.

Timothy then explained all administrative components of working with him (pricing models, etc.). I pledged myself (swore) that he'd be the first guy I called when the need arose again. He said that he couldn't wait! Cost to me for all professional advice? NADA. Good conversationalist, too. I am pre-sold! For all my future plumbing needs, it's Timothy.

I think I got off on the wrong foot with Timothy and that's the main reason for my unsatisfactory experience. I called about a small leak I had outside my home while I was at work hoping to set up an appointment for a free quote as the Daystar website suggests.

We started to talk about the leak and I got the feeling Timothy was trying to diagnose the problem over the phone which was OK but due to the nature of the problem it was sort of a waste of time. I suggested a quick visit to take a look at the problem since the house is very close to where Timothy works and he indicated that this would cost $150 per hour for the first hour and $60 per half hour after that.

Since I wanted to get an idea of the magnitude of the problem prior to committing financially to getting the job done I told Timothy I would call him back after I had had a chance to explore other options. He explained to me that a free quote other plumbers would give me wasn't really free since I would end up paying for it in the long term but I felt uncomfortable committing to a job with someone who hasn't even seen the problem.

I think Timothy either wasn't happy with my decision or he felt he could not do the job because he told me not to bother to call back. At one point in the conversation he also gave me the name and number of another plumber friend of his so perhaps he thought this job was too complex.

I agree that the one star review was posted by a competitor.

Timothy is keen to tell you what his diagnosis is in considerable detail but you get all your options laid out eventually.

I've used him several times for minor jobs and he can't be beat for getting to the bottom of the problem and fixing it. I suspect his pricing is a little above average; but well worth it.
