Chris has been keeping our lines clean for more than 20 years. He's eccentric in the best way, honest, and straight forward.
You may have to be patient if you're in a panic, but he WILL call back and offer the best deal available.
Highly recommended.

Chris is helpful, thorough And knows when to call in someone else to do other work (we needed major drain reconstruction) and he worked well with the other company
Another plus is that his answering machine is very precise about possible scheduling and even whom to call if he is away. .

HONEST, COMPETENT, TRUSTWORTHY, AFFORDABLE. Chris came to my rescue after a visit from Mr. Rooter (Oakland/Berkeley) was going to charge me $2355 to clean out my clogged sewer line (they said I needed a new outside clean out access before they could complete the job because their snake could not completely clean out the roots and they needed this access to use their camera and to ""hydro scrub"" the line...)
Luckily, Chris called at the right time as i was getting the Mr. Rooter estimate, and I ended up sending them away. Chris came a few hours later and charged me $95 to use an old fashioned snake to clean out my sewer line of ALL the roots, all in less than one hour and used the sewer access line that was available (so I didn't need a new access pipe, after all). I really appreciated his straight forward, honest plumbing services. CALL THIS MAN FOR YOUR CLOGGED DRAINS!! HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! THANK YOU, CHRIS!!

This man deserves 10 stars for his old school expertise--you just don't find people with this kind of know how. Our shower had a slow drain due to a clog. We called a plumber and a team of 2 plumbers spent 3 days trying to unclog it. They broke their drain snake in our shower and then said we needed to give them $800 to have all of our pipes replaced. Well, we told them we didn't feel comfortable with that, paid them $100 for NOT being able to unclog our drain, and sent them packing. If they couldn't unclog a drain, we certainly didn't trust them to replace all of our pipes. After checking yelp, we found Chris---a clog specialist! He got the clog out in 20minutes!!!!

Before a friend of mine told me about Chris, I suffered through too many incompetent plumbers and purported drain/ rooter services who wanted to sell me snake oil remedies that were just overpriced bootleg drano, who couldn't figure out how to actually snake the sewer line, and/ or who insisted that they needed to put a camera down the line and replace the entire pipe. I now have a collection of receipts for the yearly unclogging services of Chris' Quality. As long as I remember to call Chris every year, I don't have to worry about raw sewage bubbling out the outflow outside the house, or worse, all over the bathroom floor or into the bathtub. hallelujah. Plus, I love chatting.

Sorry to be redundant, but I feel I must chime in about how great his service is.
Chris is:
*competent and knowledgeable
*thoroughly professional
*very responsive when emergencies arise
*a straight-shooter
*personable
*reliable
*good value for the money
About our situation:
Chris has been snaking our sewer line annually for years. Our property lot was subdivided and we share a Y-split sewer line with our neighbors. The sewer line comes from the street a few feet onto our property, then splits in a Y and goes off to our neighbor and to us. Unfortunately, if our neighbor flushes a paper towel that has lipstick on it, we are the house at lower elevation and things back up into our garden. Similarly, if we don't periodically snake the tree roots that make their way in, there could be trouble. It's cheaper to snake yearly than to replace the remaining segment that wasn't trenchlessly replaced when we had some other trenchless replacement work done.
Really glad we found out about him.

My long-time plumber, who I trust, couldn't clear the clog in my bathtub. It was like an impenetrable seal. I swear I thought I was going to have to rip the wall open and rebuild the bathroom. ""Before you call a demo expert,"" said my plumber, ""call Chris Utter."" So I did, today. And he came out this afternoon. Walks up my front steps and i swear the first words out of his mouth were, ""You're not going to have to do open your walls."" And he cleared the drain in ten minutes. And he gave me good advice on my slightly leaky toilet. Is Chris chatty? Yes, but that's only a crime if you're boring. Nice guy. Honest. Have a clogged drain? Just call Chris.

Chris has been our go-to guy for clean-outs since we moved to our current home in Oakland 14 years ago. We never even thought that the sloping hillside that's covered with trees, grass and vines would harm our sewer line. Unfortunately, those tenacious roots creep into the line any way they can, and Chris is the guy who keeps them at bay.
Every spring we give him a call and he comes over and does about an hour's work cleaning things out for us. As Yelper Matt K says, use Chris instead of getting your sewer replaced. That's sound advice.
Chris is reliable, well-priced and a genuinely good guy. Highly recommended.

Chris is honest, straightforward, efficient and the best value you will find in the Bay Area for sewer cleaning and maintenance.
I have him on my calendar for yearly cleanouts. Instead of spending 5 grand on a sewer replacement, just use Chris if you can. It will take a LONG time to make up the difference.

Chris is reliable and responsive! We apparently have ""unusual"" plumbing, so what looked like a simple snaking job turned into something more involved. Chris came out right within 48 hrs of my phone call the first time AND within 3 hours of the second call, even though this was not an emergency issue AND (even more impressive) the second visit was under his 30 day warranty, so the visit was at no cost to us. He's good natured, has a tendency to grumble, very straight forward and inexpensive.
