Capital Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electric
Company Overview
For three generations, our family-run business, Capital Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electric, offers complete HVAC, plumbing, and electrical services for residential and commercial clients, as well as a certified duct cleaning service by NADCA.
Founded in 1937 by German immigrants William Schmidtke and Helmut Klein, our journey began with the acquisition of Tobin Sheet Metal. Initially named Capital Sheet Metal, we operated from State Street. Over the years, our sheet metal skills expanded into ductwork creation, leading us to become a full-service heating and air conditioning contractor.
We incorporated in 1963 and also became an authorized dealer for General Electric, which is now Trane, for heating and air conditioning solutions.
The year 1973 saw us move to our present location at 1218 Carpenter Rd SE in Lacey.
In 1980, following William Schmidtke's death, Larry Schmidtke and his wife Dianne took charge of the company.
In 2003, Larry and Dianne retired, and their three sons—William, Chuck, and Dean—took ownership in 2007. In 2007, we also registered the trade name ""Capital Heating & Cooling.""
Dean, who grew up in the heating and air conditioning sector, has been involved in numerous aspects, including residential and commercial sales, dealer and manufacturer support, marketing, and accounting.

Service dept person could use a lesson in customer relations and also how to order correct part. Screwup cost us several days with no heat in below freezing weather. Service persons who did the actual work were very good (except first fellow, who may or may not have caused subsequence problem). Billing showed no itemization of work or part costs, even though this was requested. This ain't no way to get repeat business.
Kari M.We were thrilled with our service. We just moved into our new home and Josh did a fantastic job of showing us how things worked and making suggestions to have things work better.
We signed up for the yearly service contract so that we can call anytime we need something
I would definitely give Josh and and Capital a 5 star rating!
Thank you
Another great experience working with the technicians on Capital Heating and Cooling's team. Truly exceptionally customer service! A company couldn't ask for better ambassadors. A pleasure doing business with the entire team.
Gaspar G.We had our furnace cleaned and replaced by them and then added a new A/C. They did a superb job and also gave me a great payment plan. Dean and his crew do an amazing jobs. Today was my yearly equipment anniversary and they also come out and maintain them like new.
Andi C.Matt from Capital heating came out timely to give us an estimate. We decided to go with them because of the warranty they provide. It wasn't just the manufacturer's warranty - they warranty their work. They installed the air conditioner and about 5 days later there was an issue and it wouldn't run. I did all the troubleshooting I could figure out and about 6 o'clock at night I called and got their answering service, who sent the notice to an on-call technician. The technician, Chris, called me back and he came over with him 45 minutes. He found there had been a little bit of movement of the air conditioner straps and some condensation dripped and put the sensor of furnace into shut down mode, which is as designed. It shut down the system so we wouldn't have a flood in the ceiling because our furnace is in the attic. Chris fixed it for the evening and then the next day Matt called me back to have another technician come out in the afternoon to make a permanent fix and make sure that it was all working OK. Due to the issue Matt informed me Capital gave us another year free of maintenance.
Josh came timely and explained everything in detail. Both technicians gave me a text with their photo, in route so that I knew who I would be seeing when I answered the door and about when to expect them. I'm very impressed with this level of service and follow through by Capital and would recommend them to anyone. I've never known that heating and air-conditioning company would have an on-call service rep - and then to also text me that they were in route, with the photo is pretty impressive.!!
Dan Y.I had them perform furnace maintenance last year. The technician was being very thorough and professional. I was so impressed with him that I wanted to continue my business with them. Fast forward this year I called to get an estimate for HVAC installation. The rep took down my number and promised that someone would call me in 24 hours. That was about a week and half ago. My wife kept asking me about it over a week. I couldn't wait any longer and decided to go with someone else. I'm sure they would have done a great job if I had stuck with them.
William S.https://capitalheatingandcooling.com/financing/
You advertise 0% APR financing for 72 months right next to a picture of a A/C condenser unit. I already have a heat pump and need the condenser. After being approved for financing, 3 days later is when I finally hear back from Matt (if I tell you I get off of work at 5:15pm, don't call me at 3:00pm expecting someone to answer), telling me that type of financing isn't for a condenser + installation, its primarily for heat pumps and other equipment. Your site doesn't list the qualifying systems even in small print for consumers to make an informed decision prior to applying for financing. I think any reasonable individual would consider these practices pretty deceptive no matter how you try to spin it.
Raul N.Not happy...new in the area and bought this house back in October. Ac season is coming so I called this guys because they are just around the corner....After speaking with them they have history on the house...plus right? Technician comes out and after service tells me my ac coils are in bad shape but should be good to go for this summer and maybe next... and he takes pictures and tells me I will get a call from someone ref replacement....I get a call that afternoon, Matt from sales, asks that I had questions...I told him what I was told... he asks what I am talking about and that he is a new unit salesman not a parts salesman, I said that I was new to this and was counting on them to tell me ....after some more frustrating exchanges, I called it a day....Matt might be the greatest salesman, but he has not a clue about customer service, he got defensive and aggressive, chuckling, obviously showing discontent....first time customer, payed 300 dollars....good technician, terrible service...
I am changing my review of Capital, I got a call from the service manager, he was informed and professional, I do appreciate the call and the friendly service, 4 stars...
Initial review would yield 5 stars for service and quickness to respond..... but unfortunately Capital truly dropped the ball with a follow up appointment... without any real excuse for not showing up. It was this past Thursday and they were supposed to be coming out to run continued diagnostics on a ductless unit that I have. My appointment was supposed to be Wednesday morning, they called late Tuesday afternoon to ask if I could reschedule my appointment due to ""things"" on their end. I accepted bumping my appointment one day to the right and adjusted my day off of work to match the same. Thursday morning rolls around, they miss their appointment window of 0800-0900 and I wait and give them the benefit of the doubt and don't call until a little after 0930. (This is due to figuring traffic might be congested as there was 2"" of snowfall over the last night) While on the phone with them, I was informed that they had cancelled my appointment because of the ""weather."" (Mind you my wife drove hear FWD car to work that morning with absolutely no issues, and our maids had already showed up at the house in their RWD car saying the roads were fine.) I was told they called my phone at 4:26PM on Wednesday and left a voicemail to advise me of this.... which at this point I know is a blatant lie because I never missed a call and my voice-mailbox is not set up, so it's impossible to leave a message... I explained that I took a day off of work for this appointment and that the roads were clear and they would have no issues getting out this way; at which point I was told verbatim ""it is not your primary heat source so you are not a priority and we are not coming out there"".... they started off great with the first few visits, but this is certainly no way to run a small business in a service industry... especially when you already asked the customer to flex a day on a scheduled appointment due to your business needs. Will definitely not be recommended their services to anyone at this point in time, and we will be going elsewhere for the purchasing of our new system.
I have a 21 year old house that has never had the air ducts cleaned and I decided it was time to get it done before out of town family arrived for Thanksgiving. I sent an email to Capitol Heating and Cooling first thing in the morning and within minutes received a reply from the Service Manager, Chuck. Chuck was very knowledgeable and able to book me an appointment very quickly.
The day of the cleaning I was pleased to see the truck pull up 10 minutes early in my driveway and I was equally pleased to meet the technician, Chris. He was intelligent, friendly, professional, and a true master of his craft. Chris explained the scope of work and the total price before getting started. He worked quickly but was meticulous about where he left his tools and equipment and he treated my home with the utmost respect. He happily answered all of my questions and clearly knew his trade.
The total price for cleaning the air ducts in my 2,022 square foot home with 14 air vents (including the return air vents) was $438.00. A sanitizing solution was used in each vent and cleaning the dryer vent air duct was complimentary. My house smells great and I couldn't be happier with the service.
Great job Chris and Capitol Heating and Cooling, it won't be another 21 years before I call you again.
