James has been in the plumbing industry since the late 70s. Achieved his Journeyman license in Louisiana in 1985. In late 1985, he relocated to Atlanta and successfully passed the exam for his Georgia Master license. In 1987, James and Sylvia moved back to New Orleans. James passed the second Louisiana Master license exam in 1992. He contributed to hurricane relief plumbing projects in Texas. He earned his Pearl River County Mississippi certification in 1993, but it lapsed when job opportunities dried up.
