Active in plumbing since the late 70s. Obtained his Journeyman license in Louisiana in 1985. He moved to Atlanta in 1985 and acquired his Georgia Master license after passing the exam. In 1987, James and Sylvia moved back to New Orleans. In 1992, he completed the second test for the Louisiana Master license and earned his certification. He contributed to hurricane relief plumbing projects in Texas. In 1993, he passed the Pearl River County Mississippi exam but allowed it to lapse when work was scarce.
