Active in plumbing since the year 1979. He earned his Journeyman license in Louisiana in 1985. He moved to Atlanta in 1985 and acquired his Georgia Master license after passing the exam. James and his wife Sylvia returned to the New Orleans area in 1987. James passed the second Louisiana Master license exam in 1992. He has also participated in hurricane relief plumbing work in Texas. He earned his Pearl River County Mississippi certification in 1993, but it lapsed when job opportunities dried up.
