Hugh E. Joyce launched James River Heating Air Conditioning Company in 1967. Originally named Joyce Air, the business started as a one-man operation, with the owner overseeing sales, installations, and all aspects of the operation. In the early 1970s, the company grew and broadened its services, and around the mid-1970s, the company changed its name to James River Air Conditioning.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the company further developed, offering services and products through three main divisions: Residential, Commercial, and Design/Build.

James River and its partner, Whitescarver Engineering, serve the Richmond, Virginia and Roanoke, Virginia markets, respectively. Hugh went to the University of Richmond, where he earned a B.S. Degree in Management with a focus on marketing and finance.
