In 1920, Vearl Manwill set out with his horse and wagon, equipped with tools, carbide lights, and piping to start a mission that brought him to many farmhouses to implement “modern” carbide lighting and piping. His installations were part of the first indoor lighting systems ever created. After some time, Vearl decided to make Salt Lake City his home and subsequently opened a plumbing shop in his garage on 2700 South. In 1943, he opened his first showroom on 300 South in Salt Lake City. The shop was a full-service hardware store that sold washers, dryers, and even jewelry. Vearl purchased one of the first television sets in Salt Lake City. Though the television only displayed black and white images, it captured the attention of the town and drew crowds of people. In time, Vearl no longer needed to sell jewelry and appliances to concentrate on what he excelled at—plumbing and heating supplies. The business is now managed by his grandson.

Today, Jim Manwill, the third generation, runs the business. Jim grew up immersed in the family business engaging in tasks from trench digging to plumbing new homes, executing repairs, and selling HVAC products.
