Following graduation, he joined the Navy, where he worked as a pipefitter for 3.5 years.
He enrolled in Class A schools in San Diego in 1961 to learn pipefitting and plumbing.
After his honorable discharge, he took a position at Shell Chemical Co. in Torrance, California, in 1963.
While working as a lab technician at Shell Chemical for 8.5 years, he attended Golden West College and Long Beach State on the GI Bill.
In 1964, he tied the knot with his wife in Redondo Beach, California.
They returned to Oregon in 1971, purchasing a home in Metzger, where they have lived ever since.
They have three children and eight grandchildren.
They marked their 45th wedding anniversary in May.
