The following year, in 1996, he founded his own business, JJ Affordable Sewers. After completing the Mid County Sewer Project in 1999, John relocated to Las Vegas and became a licensed plumber. He founded another venture, Pacific Plumbing, which is still in operation. In 2002, he came back to Oregon and launched NW Home Services.
