During my teenage years, I was fortunate to learn about plumbing from my two uncles, who ran their own plumbing and heating enterprises. During that period, I didn’t fully appreciate the opportunity and thought the trade was “too dirty,” but my initial dislike slowly evolved into a deep interest. I was enthusiastic about learning, and before long, I progressed rapidly as a plumbing technician. As skilled as I was, I found it challenging to grasp the underlying concepts. My uncles instructed me in repairs and replacements, but when confronted with anything atypical, I was entirely bewildered! Still, I was not content with this limited understanding, so I committed to exploring the science and origins of plumbing! Following a conflict with a supervisor, I opted to go into business for myself, which set the stage for my aspirations to come to life! Since then, I’ve been fortunate to teach my skills to my two younger brothers and watch them thrive as well!

Throughout my childhood, I frequently heard that I was bright or gifted, and this made me feel I was meant to achieve something beyond myself. Raised by a single mom, financial struggles were always present. I often dreamed of using my ‘gifted brain’ to solve our problems, yet that day felt like it would never arrive. During my teenage years, I faced a tough period that caused me to lose faith in myself. I started to believe a shadow loomed over me, and I lost focus on my aspirations. A few years later, my family and I faced eviction from our apartment, while I worked for minimum wage and delivered pizzas on the side. I reflected on those I believed I had let down, and I took the blame. That experience of feeling backed into a corner with no one to save me motivated me to find the tools I needed to not only escape but to lay the groundwork for a better tomorrow!
