During the war, he attended the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. The family came to Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has been here ever since. His uncles played a role in laying the first sewer in Kansas City.

He initiated his plumbing venture armed with just a pair of pipe wrenches. Without a truck, he used the family car for his first service calls. He transported pipes and heavy fittings in a trailer. His wife managed phone calls at home while raising their three children. She took service calls, and Dick Ray responded to them by phone and attended to the jobs. In 1941, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Dick Ray was attending the University of Washington in Seattle. After serving in the South Pacific during the war, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where his ship was decommissioned at the war's end.

In 1949, three years later, Dick Ray returned to Kansas City, his hometown, to start his plumbing business and build a family with his wife, Shirley. Unable to afford a truck, he started his business using the family Chevy for service calls, pulling an equipment trailer. Dick took on all the labor by himself, as he had no assistants. While raising their three children, Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam. She often took service calls and communicated the work orders to Dick.

Even in those early days, they provided 24-hour service. The phone rang by Dick's bedside, and he was always ready to take the call.
