He studied at the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut during the war. The family that immigrated from England to Kansas City and contributed to the first sewer installation six generations ago remains strong. At the time of the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941, Dick Ray was a student at the University of Washington in Seattle. He departed Seattle to enroll in the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, where he graduated as an Ensign.

After serving in the South Pacific during the war, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where his ship was decommissioned at the war's end.

Three years later, in 1949, back in his hometown of Kansas City, Dick started his plumbing business and began a family with his new wife, Shirley. Since he couldn't buy a truck, he began his business using the family Chevy for service calls, with an equipment trailer in tow. Dick worked alone, handling all the labor himself. While raising their three children, Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam. She regularly handled service calls and passed the work orders to Dick.
