Dick Ray was educated at the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut during his military service. The family came to Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has been here ever since. His uncles contributed to the installation of Kansas City's first sewer.

He began the plumbing business with just a pair of pipe wrenches. Without a truck, he used the family car for his first service calls. He towed a trailer carrying pipes and heavy fittings. His wife took care of phone calls at home while also raising their three kids. She answered service calls, and Dick Ray followed up on them by phone to handle the work. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, Dick Ray was studying at the University of Washington in Seattle. Following his service in the South Pacific, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where the ship was decommissioned after the war.

Three years later, in 1949, back in his hometown of Kansas City, Dick started his plumbing business and began a family with his new wife, Shirley. He couldn't afford a truck and began his business using the family Chevy for service calls, towing an equipment trailer. Dick took on all the labor by himself, as he had no assistants. Shirley managed phone calls at their home in Merriam while also caring for their three kids. She regularly handled service calls and passed the work orders to Dick.
