In 1950, Dick Ray, who had recently served as the commanding officer of a Navy LCI, launched his plumbing business. During the war, he attended the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. The family came to Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has been here ever since. His uncles played a role in laying the first sewer in Kansas City.

He initiated his plumbing venture armed with just a pair of pipe wrenches. Without a truck, he used the family car for his first service calls. He transported pipes and heavy fittings in a trailer. His wife managed phone calls at home while raising their three children. She answered service calls, and Dick Ray followed up on them by phone to handle the work. Even in those times, they provided round-the-clock service.

The family that immigrated from England to Kansas City and contributed to the first sewer installation six generations ago remains strong. In 1941, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Dick Ray was attending the University of Washington in Seattle. He departed Seattle to enroll in the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, where he graduated as an Ensign.

Following his service in the South Pacific, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where the ship was decommissioned after the war.

In 1949, three years later, Dick returned to his hometown of Kansas City, where he started his plumbing business and began a family with his new bride, Shirley. He couldn't afford a truck and began his business using the family Chevy for service calls, towing an equipment trailer. Dick worked alone, handling all the labor himself. Shirley managed phone calls at their home in Merriam while also caring for their three kids. She regularly handled service calls and passed the work orders to Dick.

Even in those early days, they provided 24-hour service. The phone rang next to Dick's bed, and he was always prepared to answer.
