The man who started it all, Arthur W. Crooks, came into the world in the year 1885 in the town of Goshen, Indiana and transferred to the city of Sturgis, Michigan as a young boy. Even though he was the top student in his class, he received a scholarship to Hillsdale College, yet financial issues held him back from attending.
He worked as a teacher in Colon, MI and in 1907 he moved in Battle Creek to start his plumbing career.
In 1909, he became the plumbing inspector in the city of Battle Creek, however resumed plumbing in 1911 by joining Hanchett Plumbing, a company he would eventually buy in the year 1912. At that time, he earned 12.5 cents for each hour worked.
The children of Arthur, Helen, Walt, and Warren all participated in the plumbing industry. Helen and Warren continued to run the business from the middle of the 1950s up until March 1980. Today, the company is owned and operated by Arthur's grandson, Arthur W. Crooks II.
