The man who started it all, Arthur W. Crooks, entered life in 1885 in the city of Goshen, Indiana and transferred to Sturgis, MI during his childhood. Even though he was the highest achiever in his school, he received a chance to attend college to study at Hillsdale College, but financial issues held him back from attending.
He became an educator in Colon, Michigan and by 1907 he moved in the city of Battle Creek to begin his plumbing trade.
In 1909, he took on the role of plumbing inspector in the city of Battle Creek, yet resumed his plumbing work in 1911 when he joined Hanchett Plumbing, which he later acquired in 1912. At that time, he earned 12-1/2 cents per hour.
Arthur's children, including Helen, Walt, and Warren were involved in the plumbing industry. Both Helen and Warren managed the business from the mid-1950s up until March 1980. Now, the business is managed and owned by Arthur's grandson, Arthur W. Crooks II.
