Arthur W. Crooks, our founder, was born in 1885 in Goshen, Indiana and relocated to Sturgis, MI during his childhood. Despite being the valedictorian in his school, he received a chance to attend college at Hillsdale College, however financial issues prevented him from attending.
Arthur took on a teaching role in the town of Colon, Michigan and around 1907 he moved to Battle Creek to start his plumbing career.
In 1909, he was appointed as the plumbing inspector in Battle Creek, but went back to plumbing in 1911 by working with Hanchett Plumbing, a business he ultimately purchased in 1912. At that time, he earned 12.5 cents for each hour worked.
The children of Arthur, Helen, Walt, and Warren all were involved in the plumbing industry. Helen along with Warren continued to run the business from the mid-1950s up until March 1980. Now, the company is owned and operated by Arthur's grandson, Arthur W. Crooks II.
