In those days, most people relied on hay and grain. To cut costs, Alvin constructed a railroad siding and bought in bulk. Deliveries were made to homes and farms using horse-drawn wagons.

As he diversified into heating and cooling, Alvin offered firewood and ice. He acquired woodlots, constructed an ice house near Weymouth Great Pond, and delivered year-round to homes, farms, and businesses.

With the transition from wood to coal, Alvin and his son-in-law Leonard Bicknell created a state-of-the-art coal storage facility and used motorized trucks for transport.

As coal-powered systems evolved, we introduced Central Heating Systems to the South Shore.

Alvin Bicknell, the son of Leonard, moved from coal to oil by implementing numerous early automatic heating systems in the state.

My great-great-grandfather built Alvin Hollis's legacy by treating our customers and team like family. Since 1871, we have upheld this principle by ensuring our South Shore neighbors remain safe and comfortable.

Both my grandfather and father felt fulfilled by the happiness of our customers with their efficiently engineered heating, cooling, and plumbing systems. As a fifth-generation owner, I share that same sense of fulfillment.

I began working part-time as a teenager and have been involved in every facet of our business. In 1991, I earned a BS from St. Lawrence University. Since then, I have relished my full-time role at Alvin Hollis, concentrating on Sales, Marketing, and Customer Service.

In 1995, I began cycling with my dad in the Pan-Mass Challenge bike-a-thon, raising nearly $800,000 for Dana Farber. I am a board member of the South Shore Chamber of Commerce and hold a Platinum Membership in the President's Circle at South Shore Hospital.
