Dick Ray started his plumbing company in 1950 after serving as the commanding officer of a Navy LCI. During the war, he attended the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. His family immigrated to Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has remained ever since. His uncles were involved in the construction of the first sewer system in Kansas City.

He began the plumbing business with just a pair of pipe wrenches. Lacking a truck, he utilized the family car for his initial service calls. He used a trailer to haul pipes and heavy fittings. His wife took care of phone calls at home while also raising their three kids. She took service calls, and Dick Ray responded to them by phone and attended to the jobs. Even back then, they provided 24-hour service.

The family that came from England to Kansas City and assisted in laying the first sewer six generations ago continues to flourish. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, Dick Ray was studying at the University of Washington in Seattle. He moved from Seattle to the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, graduating as an Ensign.

After serving in the South Pacific during the war, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where his ship was decommissioned at the war's end.

Three years later, in 1949, back in his hometown of Kansas City, Dick started his plumbing business and began a family with his new wife, Shirley. Since he couldn't buy a truck, he began his business using the family Chevy for service calls, with an equipment trailer in tow. He managed all the work himself, without any helpers. While raising their three children, Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam. She often took service calls and communicated the work orders to Dick.

Inspired by his father-in-law, a plumber, Mike developed an interest in the trade. After completing four years of education at Plumbers Local 8, Mike received his Journeyman's certification and later obtained his Master Plumber's License.

He completed an apprenticeship at A.D. Jacobson focusing on commercial plumbing. He then switched over to residential plumbing and spent many years in the local industry. Following a year as a Maintenance Supervisor at KU Medical Center, he saw a chance to launch his own business.
