In 1950, Dick Ray, fresh from his role as commanding officer of a Navy LCI, established his plumbing business. He studied at the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut during the war. His family arrived in Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has stayed ever since. His uncles played a role in laying the first sewer in Kansas City.

He began the plumbing business with just a pair of pipe wrenches. Since he couldn't afford a truck, he relied on the family car for his first service calls. He towed a trailer carrying pipes and heavy fittings. While raising their three children, his wife handled phone calls at home. She took service calls, and Dick Ray responded to them by phone and attended to the jobs. Even back then, they provided 24-hour service.

The family that immigrated from England to Kansas City and contributed to the first sewer installation six generations ago remains strong. At the time of the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941, Dick Ray was a student at the University of Washington in Seattle. He moved from Seattle to the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, graduating as an Ensign.

After a tour in the South Pacific, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where the vessel was decommissioned at the war's conclusion.

In 1949, three years later, Dick returned to his hometown of Kansas City, where he started his plumbing business and began a family with his new bride, Shirley. Since he couldn't buy a truck, he began his business using the family Chevy for service calls, with an equipment trailer in tow. Dick took on all the labor by himself, as he had no assistants. Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam while raising their three children. She frequently took service calls and relayed the work orders to Dick.

Even in those early days, they provided 24-hour service. The phone rang by Dick's bedside, and he was always ready to take the call.
