Dick Ray was educated at the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut during his military service. The family came to Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has been here ever since. His uncles played a role in laying the first sewer in Kansas City.

Starting with only a pair of pipe wrenches, he launched his plumbing business. Without a truck, he used the family car for his first service calls. He used a trailer to haul pipes and heavy fittings. While raising their three children, his wife handled phone calls at home. She fielded service calls, and Dick Ray took them over the phone to address the jobs. They offered 24-hour service even in those early days.

The family that immigrated from England to Kansas City and contributed to the first sewer installation six generations ago remains strong. At the time of the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941, Dick Ray was a student at the University of Washington in Seattle. He moved from Seattle to the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, graduating as an Ensign.

Following his service in the South Pacific, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where the ship was decommissioned after the war.

In 1949, three years later, Dick Ray returned to Kansas City, his hometown, to start his plumbing business and build a family with his wife, Shirley. Unable to afford a truck, he started his business using the family Chevy for service calls, pulling an equipment trailer. Dick worked alone, handling all the labor himself. While raising their three children, Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam. She often took service calls and communicated the work orders to Dick.

In those early days, they still provided round-the-clock service. The phone rang by Dick's bedside, and he was always ready to take the call.
